- This position is entitled to progressive vacation accrual at the following rate:
- 11 days per year (0-5 years)
- 16 days per year (6-10 years)
- 21 days per year (11-14 years)
- 23 days per year (15 or more years)
- This position receives specific holidays and Board-granted days off with pay as determined by the holiday schedule (see CSEA 8.7.1 (Download PDF reader)). This position also receives sick leave of one day per month of employment.
- Current position work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. Work schedules may vary dependent upon District need and may include work on weekends, holidays and on-call shifts.

Under the direction of an administrator, performs preventive maintenance and makes major and minor repairs of buses and other District vehicles; operates a bus and performs related work as required.
This is the journey level class in the Transportation Mechanic series. Positions in this class perform the full range of duties under general supervision, and may be assigned specialized or more complex assignments requiring advanced skill. All positions assigned to the class work independently, exercising judgment and initiative within general guidelines in performing the full range of duties assigned to this classification. As needed, may operate District buses and vehicles over designated routes and on field trips/travel. Work schedules may vary dependent on District need and may include regular day shifts, weekends, holidays and on-call shifts.

- Performs complex mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance on diesel, gasoline and alternative powered vehicles, and related equipment*
- Diagnoses malfunctions and performs complex mechanical work including overhauling engines, transmissions, fuel systems, differentials, wheel cylinders and brakes; installs rings, rods, valves and main bearings; repairs lighting systems; diagnoses and repairs electronic fuel injection systems, computers and sensor*
- Tunes engines; adjusts points, condensers, timing, carburetors, valves, clutches and brakes*
- Lubricates motorized equipment; cleans and replaces oil filters; charges batteries and mounts, balances and repairs tires of all types*
- Welds and fabricates parts as needed*
- Services and repairs air conditioning systems*
- Performs minor body repairs and painting; reupholsters bus seats*
- Prepares vehicles to pass the State Smog Check Program*
- Operates a computer to perform data entry, access email and District announcements, etc*
- Assists in keeping records of repairs and maintenance work; assists in obtaining parts and supplies*
- As needed, drives buses and other motorized vehicles; operates truck and trailer to haul equipment to and from campus*
- Performs duties in accordance with all department policies and procedures, including safety regulations*
- May serve on a variety of District committees as requested.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
- Certificate of completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program related to the position; OR
- Associate’s Degree in automotive technology or a related field or the equivalent*; AND
- One (1) year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of this position; AND
- Graduation from high school, G.E.D. or the equivalent**.
*Associate’s Degree education equivalency equals two (2) years of increasingly responsible work experience for each full year (24-30 units) of college.
**High school education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
(To be maintained throughout duration of employment with the District.)
- Valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
- As a condition of employment, applicants must pass a required pre-employment drug and alcohol test and all subsequent Department of Transportation random drug and alcohol testing.
- As a condition of employment, applicants must provide a current DMV H-6 issued within previous 30-days.
Possession of or the ability to obtain within the first 6-months of employment (during probationary period):
- Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with school bus, passenger and air brake endorsements issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles*
- Valid school bus driver certificate*
- Valid Medical Examiners Certificate (MEC) as required for operation of a bus
- Valid First Aid/CPR certificate*
- Valid MVAC 609 Certificate (Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning EPA 609 Certificate*
- Valid Fork Lift and Aerial Lift Operators certificate*
* District will provide training for certifications. All licenses and certificates must be maintained throughout duration of employment with the District.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
- Valid Class A or B commercial driver’s license
- Experience, training and certifications in gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered automotive and/or medium/heavy duty truck/bus multiplexed electronic engine control systems, preventive maintenance, and repair. (Example; Cummins Insite, Caterpillar ET, Allison Transmission, ASE Certifications, Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Systems)
- ASE Master Mechanic Certification: Automotive and light truck, or medium heavy duty truck, or school bus
- Valid school bus driver certificate
- Valid First Aid/CPR certificate
- Valid MVAC 609 certificate
- Valid Fork Lift and Aerial Lift certificate
- Experience, training and certifications in school bus maintenance, repair and inspection
- Experience driving medium/heavy trucks, buses or school buses
- Experience working within an educational institution
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: May be acquired through education, training and/or experience.
Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; safe driving practices; California Motor Vehicle and Education Codes applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students, staff and faculty; tools, parts, equipment and methods used in maintaining and repairing trucks, buses and other motorized vehicles; preventative maintenance and methods of lubricating and servicing vehicles; tools and test equipment required to diagnose electrical and mechanical defects in motorized vehicles; exhaust emission control systems; computer usage and associated software.
Ability to: diagnose and perform routine to complex repairs of vehicles; skillfully and safely use tools and equipment; clean, lubricate, and service automotive vehicles rapidly and thoroughly; prepare repair estimates and keep accurate maintenance records; drive a bus and other automotive equipment safely and efficiently; follow oral and written instructions; work cooperatively with others and in a team environment; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; maintain shop in safe and clean manner; learn and interpret the rules, regulations and policies and procedures of the District and those affecting departmental operations; effectively operate a computer to perform position functions; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to, and the understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Tasks require occasionally moving heavy objects (50 to 100 lbs), exposure to weather and temperature extremes, machinery hazards, intense noise from machinery, poor lighting, electric currents, toxic agents and fumes, working in confined spaces, traffic hazards.
- The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment.
